The programme of studies for MSc in Statistics, as part of the masters' degree offerings by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research (OR) has been designed as a continuation in advanced studies in Probability, Statistics and OR. The MSc course ranges widely over a large number of advanced topics in the main areas. The structure of the course centres around a dissertation in which theory and application come together in a logically coherent manner, complementing one another in the process of mastering a repertoire of mathematical, computational and statistical techniques. We also accept dissertations which are of a more theoretical bent provided the level of the mathematics involved is of a sufficient level. Once a plan for dissertation has been formulated, three supporting study units are selected to help the student acquire the techniques and theoretical underpinnings of relevant areas at a sufficiently deep level.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted following an interview to ascertain their capability to follow the Course. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

Important note: This sequence of study-units is a comprehensive list which includes topics regularly registered by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research with university authorities for POSSIBLE use by postgraduate students as part of their courses. The selection of study-units for such purposes has to be done in conformity with departmental policies and through advice, consultation and approval by the relevant authorities.

Students are required to register for study-units equivalent to 30 ECTS credits and a 60 ECTS credit dissertation to a total of 90 ECTS credits.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 2 of academic year 2025-26 (February 2025) and continues up to the end of the course. The elective study-units start in Semester 2 of academic year 2024-25 (February 2025) and continue up to the end of the course.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and Bye-Laws for the degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Science.

By the end of the course, you will:

Be proficient in anything that involves mathematical and logical rigour.
Have a full appreciation of the support which the chosen subject provides within the areas you are working on.
Have an awareness of current advances in all relevant subjects.
Enhance and widen the experience of dealing competently with the notions of uncertainty and randomness in a logically valid and mathematically sophisticated way.
Be able to identify probabilistic, statistical and/or operations research contexts within practical problems, and subsequently to produce correct formulations.
Become fluent and confident in accessing and consulting research work, including sophisticated theoretical constructs, in the pursuit of devising solutions for problems of a quantitative nature.
